Meet Damien Woolnough: 2026 Fashions on the Field Judge

30 October 2026 • Written by VRC

Damien Woolnough has spent more than 25 years covering Australian fashion for publications such as vogue.com.au, The Australian, Elle Australia, L’Officiel Australia, InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar and GQ. Most recently, he was fashion and style editor for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. In August, he became the inaugural creative director of the Australian Fashion Festival (formerly the Melbourne Fashion Festival).

Judging: Millinery, Cup Day; Grand Finals, Oaks Day

What will you be looking for in entrants?

A nod to contemporary trends, personal flair and elegance over exhibitionism. I’d also love to see a nod to international runways, with a dash of Melbourne design excellence.

What do you love most about Fashions on the Field?

I love the encouragement it gives people to express themselves through fashion, with the filter of trackside tradition providing style safety guards. It’s also an opportunity to see the incredible work of Melbourne’s world-class milliners.

Any advice for anyone thinking of entering?

Be your best self. It’s Best Dressed and Suited, not fancy dress. Save the costumes for when you get home from Derby Day (on Halloween).

Your next great race-day look could already be in your wardrobe.

Give pre-loved fashion its moment in the spotlight at Fashions on the Field: The Remix, presented by Rack It Club, on TAB Champions Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November. With two categories – Best Dressed: The Remix and Best Suited: The Remix.

Rewear, rework or restyle a look that tells your story, then take to the stage and show Flemington how it’s done.
