Derby Day Best Dressed: Monochrome style makes a statement

2 November 2026 • Written by Celia Purdey

Polka dots, sculptural silhouettes and statement millinery define Derby Day fashion as Fashions on the Field Best Dressed entrants bring fresh creativity to the classic black-and-white dress code.

Prints were everywhere, and polka dots dominated. A timeless print that drifts in and out of the trend cycle, dots are back on catwalks and red carpets, worn in ways that feel both nostalgic and fresh. Kendall Jenner’s custom Valentino at the recent Academy Museum Gala is a prime example.

Alongside the dots were houndstooth, bold graphic stripes, pop-art references and even newspaper print. Together, they brought dimension and interest to the two-tone palette.

Millinery has shifted, too. Judge and milliner Jill Humphries noted that, after several years of fascinators and smaller pieces, disc hats and wider brims have made a comeback. And, in the spirit of making the most of what you already have, one entrant fashioned her headpiece from a cushion cover.

Accessories added considered finishing touches. Gloves were worn short and long, cuffs were oversized and sometimes detached, and brooches adorned lapels and necklines. Hair was swept into neat up-dos to show off high, straight necklines.

Silhouette was another big story. Accentuated shoulders and strong shapes gave outfits structure, while sculptural details and texture – particularly a generous sprinkling of feathers – added depth to a two-colour dress code.

Brooke Strahan was “over the moon” to be named a finalist after eight years away from Flemington. A farmer from Goulburn, as well as a writer and artist, she relishes the opportunity to dress up. Her sculptural chiffon dress by Athena Lin Haute Couture drew inspiration from her watercolour illustrations. Fully micro-pleated, the dress incorporates fishing line through sections of the fabric to help maintain its shape.

Emma Scodellaro, the 2024 Best Dressed winner, is chasing another victory on Thursday after securing her fourth grand final appearance. As a Collingwood supporter, entering on Derby Day was always a given. “Black and white is so classic and elegant, and there are so many ways to style it,” she said.

“You look around today, and no two looks are the same.”

Inspired by the shape of a bag she’s owned for years, Emma sourced the design from a Milanese designer. The piece became even more special following her first visit to the city this year. Jill Humphries made her millinery, but Emma had the overall look in mind. “Half the fun is the planning,” she said. “Walking on stage is fun, but I love sitting at home designing my look.”

Nikki Howells-Schram’s last-minute change of direction paid off. She changed her mind about her outfit the day before Derby Day, buying an Effie Kats dress and cape during her lunch break and topping them off with a piece by Andrea Cainero of Somewhere Here Now. The all-white ensemble made an impact. Ruching and gathered pleats at the hips brought movement and drama to the otherwise ladylike silhouette, while the cape added a touch of quiet luxury.
