Tom Kitten wins The All-Star Mile as Joliestar shines in Yulong Newmarket Handicap

Super Saturday has delivered a spectacular day of racing, with 15,237 racegoers flocking to Flemington to witness the James Cummings trained Tom Kitten salute in the $2.5 million Group 1 The All-Star Mile and Joliestar producing an emphatic win in the $1.5 million Group 1 Yulong Newmarket Handicap.

Tom Kitten won in a photo finish from champion Mr Brightside with Light Infantry Man in third. The win gave jockey Ben Melham his first win in The All-Star Mile.

Young Victorian mother Chelsey Power won $100,000 as the lucky owner ambassador for Tom Kitten after entering a radio promotion with The Fox. The racing enthusiast said she was overjoyed with the result and plans to spend the money renovating her house.

“This feeling right here, I want to keep going so I’m in a market for a racehorse, maybe two.

This is an incredible feeling, what an excellent run, I’m so happy,” Ms Power said.

Cambridge Stud’s mighty mare Joliestar brought her classy credentials to Flemington winning the Yulong Newmarket Handicap for Chris Waller and jockey Damian Lane, adding to the star hoops tally of wins for the day.

Damian accepted the Dean Holland Trophy from the family of the late Dean Holland, adding even more meaning to the win.

Trainer Matt Laurie took home the two Group 2 races today, with Treasurethe moment winning the $300,000 Group 2 TAB Kewney Stakes (1600m) while Vinrock won the $300,000 Group 2 MSS Security Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

The VRC teamed up with the Good Friday Appeal to raise much needed funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital, with the generosity of racegoers seeing more than $12,000 raised for the appeal, taking the total this autumn to more than $32,000.

In recognition of International Women’s Day, the Victorian Wakeful Club hosted its annual ‘Lady of Racing’ award to acknowledge outstanding females in the racing industry, with Kick Collective Managing Director Vicky Leonard taking out the prize.

Feast by Melbourne Food and Wine Festival was again popular with racegoers, with visitors spoilt for choice in the form of Spanish Tapas at MoVida, Argentinian flavours from San Telmo, Italian from Tipo 00 and Chinese delicacies from Lee Ho Fook.

VRC Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said it was spectacular showcase of quality racing and entertainment.

“Super Saturday delivered an exceptional day for racegoers with 15,237 people flocking to Flemington to enjoy quality Group 1 racing, fantastic food and wonderful entertainment,” Ms Rogers said.

“Tom Kitten was an epic winner of The All-Star Mile before Joliestar showed her class in the Yulong Newmarket Handicap, giving our Flemington trainers James Cummings and Chris Waller a Group 1 double.

“We look forward to concluding the Flemington Racing Spectacular in style with our final Group 1 race day this month, TAB Australian Cup Day on Saturday 29 March, which will be a wonderful finale to autumn racing at Flemington.

TAB Australian Cup Day will see the running of the Group 1 $2.5 million TAB Australian Cup and the Lexus Roy Higgins, offering the first golden ticket into the 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The day will see the return of Fashions on the Field in autumn, with a Best Dressed and Best Suited finalist to be awarded on the day and the winners to go through to the Crown Oaks Day Finals with the chance to win a spot in the grand finals on Crown Oaks Day on Thursday 6 November.
