One Year On: Dom Sutton reflects on his breakthrough Group 1 moment

Twelve months on from his breakthrough Group 1 triumph in the Australian Guineas at Flemington, Dom Sutton still reflects on the day as a career-defining moment.

“It was the biggest day in my career so far and something I’ll cherish forever,” Sutton says.

The win with Feroce marked a major milestone for Sutton Racing, but the young trainer is quick to credit his team.

“There’s a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes – stable staff, farriers, vets – all making sure the horse is healthy, sound and happy. A lot can go wrong, so it’s about minimising risk and getting everything right on the day.”

Ironically, Sutton was battling the flu on Guineas Day, but confidence in Feroce’s preparation never wavered. After a strong lead-up run, he entrusted jockey Billy Egan to handle the race without instruction.

“He knows the horse better than anyone. In those races you need a bit of luck and we got it.”

Watching from the trainers’ room alongside his fiancée Raquel, Sutton remembers a mix of excitement and relief – particularly after Ferocity’s near-miss in the Caulfield Guineas the previous spring.

The win brought more than silverware.

“A Group 1 is everything. It changed how people looked at us and brought great support from owners and breeders. You need the right horses to compete at that level.”

Now, with emerging stayers After Summer and Classic Gem progressing through autumn targets, Sutton’s focus remains forward-thinking.

“You always dream about the Melbourne Cup,” he says. “But for now, we’ll concentrate on the next step and keep building.”
