Melbourne Cup Carnival was a smooth run for the track team

Many things contributed to the success of the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival, and one was the excellent track conditions due to the expertise of Liam O’Keeffe and his team. This year’s preparation came with some challenges, but planning and teamwork ensured the event ran smoothly.

Leading up to the Carnival, the team contended with dry conditions and persistent winds. With only minimal rainfall on Crown Oaks Day and some light showers after, irrigation became critical. For 14 consecutive days, the team worked through challenging conditions to ensure the turf remained well-watered, adjusting the irrigation to combat wind interference.

The strategic movement of the running rail, implemented daily, allowed fresh ground for racing while distributing wear evenly across the track. This approach not only ensured fair racing but also helped the track retain its integrity throughout the Carnival.

The team’s efforts extended beyond regular hours, with 25 full-time staff bolstered by casual workers during the Carnival. Night-shift teams handled irrigation, while others managed daily track preparations. At its peak, the operation saw around 40 workers ensuring the track remained in pristine condition. Their dedication paid off, with the track performing exceptionally across all race days.

Following TAB Champions Stakes Day, the team shifted gears to their annual track renovation. The team approaches each renovation with careful planning, balancing the aggressiveness of the process with the recovery time available between meetings. Regular benchmarking of the track’s health informs their strategies, allowing for refinements that meet both short-term needs and long-term goals.

A slightly longer break in the calendar between race meetings allows them to undertake a deeper rejuvenation process, something not done in six years. The renovation involves scarifying the turf to thin out grass and remove built-up organic matter. The process revitalises the track by promoting healthy regrowth and strengthening the turf ahead of the summer racing season.

Additionally, wintergrass – an undesirable species in the track – is meticulously removed and replaced with turf grown on-site. This precise, hands-on work maintains the consistent quality that Flemington is known for.

The track is also treated with engineered sand, fertiliser, and an impressive 250 kilograms of perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass seed. These measures promote even growth and durability, ensuring the track is race-ready for the summer season.

With forecasts indicating warmer and drier conditions, the focus now shifts to recovery and maintenance. The team plans to keep the turf in prime condition with targeted irrigation, fertilisation, and ongoing monitoring.
