Karis Teetan: Hong Kong star’s shot at Super Saturday glory

Described as one of the most positive people in Hong Kong racing, Karis Teetan’s story is one of determination. From humble beginnings in Mauritius to establishing himself as one of Hong Kong’s most successful jockeys, his journey reflects his resilience and sheer hard work.

Teetan recently became just the sixth jockey to reach 700 wins in Hong Kong, joining an elite club that includes Douglas Whyte (1,813), Zac Purton (1,773), Joao Moreira (1,235), Tony Cruz (946) and Brett Prebble (806). His milestone win came aboard the David Hall-trained Speedstar at Happy Valley.

Born and raised in Mauritius, Teetan’s passion for horses ignited early. “We grew up with nothing really,” he once recalled. “The only thing I was doing in Mauritius was running away from school and riding horses.” His father, a sugarcane cutter, worked extra hours to support his son’s dream, and at just 13, Teetan left home to train at the prestigious South African Jockey Academy in Durban – a renowned breeding ground for talent.

Teetan’s first Hong Kong winner came in 2013 aboard Amazing Always for David Ferraris, and from there, he has forged a stellar career highlighted by elite wins including the QEII Cup and Hong Kong Derby on Romantic Warrior, the Hong Kong Sprint and Chairman’s Sprint Prize on Mr Stunning, and the Champions & Chater Cup with Panfield.

Reflecting on his time in Hong Kong, Teetan has often expressed his gratitude for the opportunities and support he’s received. “It’s been a long ride, but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Hong Kong is home now.”

His ambition extends beyond Hong Kong, and in 2024 Teetan made his Lexus Melbourne Cup debut, partnering Mostly Cloudy (trained by Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young) to finish 18th. The race has captivated him since his early days in South Africa. “When I came to Hong Kong, I learned a lot about the Melbourne Cup,” he said. “Really how big the race is and how important it is for a lot of Australian people. It’s just amazing, the people that come to the races and the atmosphere.”

Now, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has granted Teetan permission to ride in Australia again – this time aboard the Chris Waller-trained Gatsby in the prestigious Yulong Newmarket Handicap on Super Saturday. It’s another significant moment in Teetan’s expanding international profile and a chance to show Australian fans why he’s such a respected figure in Hong Kong racing.
