Jim Cassidy, a true icon of Australian racing, knows the thrill of victory in the Melbourne Cup like few others. With two wins to his name – aboard Kiwi in 1983 and Might And Power in 1997 – Cassidy has cemented his place in racing history. His career boasts an impressive list of achievements, including victories in the Caulfield Cup (twice), Cox Plate, and Golden Slipper, making him one of the few jockeys to achieve racing’s grand slam.

Known as ‘The Pumper’ for his distinctive riding style, Cassidy was a master tactician in the saddle. His partnership with Might And Power was a testament to his ability to get the best out of his mounts.

In this video, Cassidy, a Hall of Famer in both New Zealand and Australia, reflects on the Melbourne Cup’s unique magic. “The Melbourne Cup’s so special,” he shares, “Because years ago, when I started watching it, it was watched by a number of countries throughout the world, now it’s watched throughout the world – everywhere.”  He recounts encountering people across the globe who eagerly anticipate the Lexus Melbourne Cup and the Carnival, drawn to its unique blend of sport, fashion, and social celebration.

Through Cassidy’s eyes, we see the race’s power to unite people from all walks of life, creating memories that last a lifetime.
