In Secret dominates Super Saturday

11 March 2023 Written by VRC

15,000 people enjoyed glorious autumn sunshine on Super Saturday at Flemington as In Secret won the 150th running of the $1.5 million Group 1 Yulong Stud Newmarket Handicap.

On the Victoria Racing Club’s (VRC) largest race day outside of the spring, the James Cummings-trained filly outclassed 15 of Australia’s most talented sprinters on week two of the Flemington Racing Spectacular. It was winning jockey Dean Holland’s first Group 1 victory in almost 13 years.

Following an incident in Race 4, jockeys Jamie Kah and Craig Williams received immediate medical attention. They were then transported to hospital where they are receiving the best of care.

Both horses involved, Flyball and Dubenenko, returned to the care of their stables and were assessed by Racing Victoria vets who reported minor abrasions but no serious injuries.

The VRC’s thoughts are with Kah and Williams, and wishes them a speedy recovery.

Right You Are made it five wins in a row and heads to the Group 1 TAB Australian Cup in two weeks after taking out the TAB Australian Cup Prelude (2000m) for Lexus Melbourne Cup-winning trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. The Group 2 TAB Kewney Stakes (1600m) went to Revolutionary Miss.

Collingwood Football Club star Nick Daicos attended as a special guest of the VRC, taking in all the action on and off the track with mates ahead of the start of the AFL season next week, enjoying the day with a young and enthusiastic crowd.

He was joined by VRC Ambassador Gai Waterhouse OAM; Australian high jumper Amy Pejkovic and partner, former Essendon footballer David Zaharakis; and VRC Ambassador Crystal Kimber.

The Flemington Fareground was again popular, with a wide range of delectable food, wine and live entertainment, plus a host of family-friendly activities.

The VRC teamed up with the Good Friday Appeal to raise much needed funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The generosity of racegoers saw more than $11,000 raised for the Appeal, which will partner with the VRC again on TAB Australian Cup Day on Saturday 25 March.

VRC CEO Steve Rosich said a bumper crowd descended on Flemington for Super Saturday.

“We were delighted to welcome 15,000 people to Flemington under sunny autumn skies, as they enjoyed world-class racing, food and entertainment,” Mr Rosich said.

“Our thoughts go out to both Jamie Kah and Craig Williams following their falls in race 4 and we wish them swift recoveries.

“We look forward to concluding the Flemington Racing Spectacular in style with our final Group 1 race day this month, TAB Australian Cup Day on 25 March, as we target a crowd of 50,000 across our four feature race days in February and March.”

TAB Australian Cup Day will see the running of the $3 million TAB Australian Cup and the Lexus Roy Higgins (2600m), offering the first golden ticket into the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
