Fashions on the Field: Milano Imai’s winning look

23 October 2026 • Written by Celia Purdey

A whirlwind journey to Melbourne couldn’t stop Milano Imai from making her mark at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes Day. With a standout sense of style and a winning look, Milano claimed her Fashions on the Field title and earned a place in the Crown Oaks Day Grand Final, where the carnival’s fashion finalists will take centre stage.

How often have you entered, and have you ever won or made finals before?

This is my 16th year entering Fashions on the Field and I’ve never won the National Title. Making the Grand Final is the closest I’ve ever come to the national title at the track. I was a digital finalist once during Covid, but that was held over Zoom, so I didn’t get to experience the thrill of being on stage at Flemington.

What made you decide to enter on Turnbull Stakes Day?

I was fortunate to win a prize that included flights and accommodation to Melbourne, so I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to come to Melbourne for Turnbull Stakes Day. I’d never been before, and I was excited to experience the day, enter the Best Suited Competition, and have a chance to go straight to the grand final.

What draws you to race day fashion?

I love that race day fashion lets you style a whole look, from the outfit to the millinery, shoes and accessories, and then share it with other people who love fashion too. I especially enjoy wearing custom-made pieces. I can’t think of another event in Australia where personal style is so celebrated and encouraged.

Tell us about the details of your outfit.

The outfit is made from the most amazing Alexander McQueen fabric, tailored into a structured jacket and fitted fishtail skirt, with tulle detail underneath. The skirt subtly accentuates the hips, and the jacket has a beautiful peplum at the back. It was made by Alana Pennisi, who is just incredible.

My millinery is by Mel from Adorn Millinery in Perth. To complement the outfit, she created a standout red sinamay swirl percher. She spent hours working out how to make the smoky details, which tie in beautifully with the suit fabric.

I carried a quirky beaded bag by Acler. To bring it all together, I bought a black tie on Amazon and spent many hours beading it with shiny black beads. I finished the look with black strappy heels with red soles, black stone earrings and a matching ring.

My hair is also a big part of my outfit (I love a fabulous up-do!), and that was by Hairstylist Maury.

Was there a particular inspiration behind the look?

The jacket made by Alana was the starting point. I loved the Alexander McQueen fabric and wanted to build an outfit around it that would work beautifully for the Best Suited competition. The striking red and black pattern has a dramatic, slightly theatrical feel, so I wanted the rest of the look to complement that.

How did it feel when your name was announced?

It was incredibly exciting. The two days beforehand had been hectic: my flight was cancelled, and I couldn’t find another one until the following evening, which would have meant missing the competition altogether. Luckily, someone cancelled a last-minute flight and I was able to book a 6 am flight to Melbourne on Saturday.

I hadn’t slept the night before, and my hairdresser kindly agreed to do my hair at 2:50 am before the flight! I’d had very little sleep for two nights, so when my name was announced, it felt as though all the stress and effort had been worth it. Being a national winner is my absolute dream, so being in the Grand Final has been a real highlight of my year.

How are you feeling heading into the finals during Cup Week?

It’s a new experience for me. Usually, I’m still frantically organising outfits, hats and accessories as I get ready to enter. This year, I can relax a little because I’ll be wearing the same outfit in the final. I’m excited to enjoy the experience and take it all in.
