Fashions on the Field: Front and centre

This year has seen exciting new changes to the Fashions on the Field competition format, beginning with its much-anticipated return to TAB Australian Cup Day for the first time since 2012. Welcomed with great enthusiasm by Melbourne’s fashion enthusiasts, the winners from that day have already earned their spot in the Crown Oaks Day final.

The momentum continues into spring with new Best Dressed and Best Suited competitions on Crown Makybe Diva Stakes Day (13 September) and TAB Turnbull Stakes Day (4 October), each providing another opportunity to be fast-tracked to the Oaks Day final. The popular digital competition will also return, enabling racewear enthusiasts to compete on-course and online.

In an exciting new development, 2025 will see Fashions on the Field staged on an enclosed stage on the Club Lawn, surrounded by the lively atmosphere of Cup Week and just a short walk from The Birdcage.

Situated amid the energy of the front lawn, it offers a fresh perspective and a stunning backdrop for the colour, craft, and creativity that define Flemington’s fashion scene. 

Victoria Racing Club CEO Kylie Rogers states that the change aims to improve the experience for both competitors and spectators. “Fashions on the Field returns home to the front lawn, right in the heart of the action. It made absolute sense to have fashion back in prime position.”

The move forms part of a broader reimagining of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, including a new space in The Park perfect for families and a revitalised live entertainment hub at The Elms. However, for many, seeing Fashions on the Field take pride of place on the front lawn will be a highlight – a new chapter for an event that has always been about much more than just a sash.

With the track as its backdrop and the fashion stakes as high as ever, this year’s competition promises a captivating blend of tradition and innovation – demonstrating that even the most enduring icons can find fresh ways to shine.
