Damien Oliver brings the People's Cup to Carnarvon

28 July 2026 Written by VRC

Where the rich red earth meets the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Carnarvon provided a spectacular backdrop as the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour brought Australia's most treasured sporting trophy to one of Western Australia's most remote racing communities.

Joined by three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Damien Oliver, the iconic Cup travelled nearly 900 kilometres north of Perth, celebrating a town where racing has been woven into community life for more than a century. For many locals, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see, hold and photograph the People's Cup without leaving their hometown.

Having experienced the thrill of winning Australia's greatest race three times, Oliver said sharing the Cup with regional communities remained one of the Tour's greatest privileges.

"Most people never get to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November, but through the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour they get to hold the most famous trophy in Australian sport. Sharing those memories with communities like Carnarvon is incredibly special, and seeing what it means to people never gets old."

Against Carnarvon's breathtaking landscape, the visit highlighted the enduring power of the People's Cup to connect Australians through a shared love of racing, history and community.
