After a highly competitive final, Souri Sengdara was named second runner-up for her sustainably created design Nova, made from the lower section and train of a couture wedding gown. Crafted from Italian silk adorned with Swarovski crystals and intricate beading, the piece symbolised renewal and transformation – both in life and design.
The runner-up, Anita Marshall, impressed with Together We Fly!, a poetic tribute to unity and support featuring hand-painted silk butterflies and rising satin ribbons that appeared to lift the hat skyward. Each element was individually designed and assembled by hand, symbolising creativity, craftsmanship, and connection.
First prize was awarded to Fiona Cooper of Victoria for her bold and technically brilliant piece, Graphica.
Striking in its simplicity, the design featured five coloured stripes – navy, khaki, amethyst, grey, and white – inspired by quilting traditions, graphic design, and subtle military precision.
“I wanted to transform flat design into a large, wearable statement piece,” Cooper said. “Clean lines and graphic precision reflect my love of structure and colour.”
Continuing the legacy of one of Australia’s most iconic fashion figures, the Lillian Frank AM MBE Millinery Award celebrates artistry, innovation and excellence in design – qualities that keep Flemington at the forefront of the nation’s fashion landscape.
