Few moments in racing compare with the emotion of winning the Melbourne Cup. For legendary jockey Damien Oliver, victory brings together a lifelong dream, the pressure of the build-up and an overwhelming sense of joy.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Oliver reflects. “A lifelong dream or hopes that you’re able to win it.”

After the intensity of the race, the emotions come flooding through. Alongside the elation is a sense of relief, as the anticipation and pressure of one of Australia's biggest sporting occasions finally give way to triumph.

“You’re just overcome with emotion,” he says.

The celebrations continue on the journey back to scale, as the winning jockey is greeted by the roar of the crowd. With tens of thousands of racegoers cheering, it is a moment unlike any other – even if holding on to the horse presents its own challenge.

“There could be thousands of people screaming at you. You’re trying to hang on to the horse too,” Oliver recalls, sharing a light-hearted memory of streamers being thrown at his mount.

Despite the excitement, it is the feeling of returning to the crowd that stays with him.

“It’s a wonderful feeling and just something you wish every jockey could feel.”

The Melbourne Cup’s unique place in Australian racing is part of what makes the victory so special. Its history, anticipation and national significance create a build-up unlike any other race in the country.

“It’s called the race that stops the nation® for a reason.”

And when the dream finally becomes reality, the result is a moment defined by raw emotion, relief and overwhelming joy.
