5 years ago: Verry Elleegant, 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup

20 October 2026

Verry Elleegant’s 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup victory marked her 10th Group 1 win, cementing her status as one of the champions of the turf. Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by James McDonald, the superstar mare produced a memorable performance to win the 161st running of the great race by four lengths

In front of a COVID-restricted crowd of 10,000 at Flemington, Verry Elleegant swept past favourite Incentivise to claim the $8 million feature and deliver Waller his first Melbourne Cup triumph.

She became the 12th mare to win the Cup, joining a distinguished lineage that began with Acrasia in 1904. For New Zealand breeder and part-owner Don Goodwin, the victory also fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Relive Verry Elleegant’s historic 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup victory.
