This look draws on the 2025 MET Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, blending my Kenyan heritage with my love for Melbourne’s creative spirit. Inspired by traditional Victorian dressmaking, I worked with a corset maker in Healesville, with each countryside trip reminding me of trips to visit my grandparents in the Kenyan highlands.
The corset, crafted in raffia, fuses Victorian form with African texture, a homage to both cultures. Gold accents from my mother and a cornrowed hairstyle add personal touches, honouring lineage and identity. It’s a look rooted in heritage, shaped by discovery, and finished with a distinctly Melbourne edge.
